The newest branch of the U.S. military
The United States Space Force was established on December 20, 2019, the first new branch of the armed forces since the Air Force split off in 1947. It sits under the Department of the Air Force, much as the Marine Corps sits under the Department of the Navy, and its members are called Guardians. Despite the science-fiction name, the Space Force is not about troops fighting in orbit. Its job is to organize, train, and equip forces to protect U.S. and allied interests in space and to deliver space capabilities to the rest of the military.
That mission is more consequential than it sounds. The Space Force operates the GPS constellation that the entire world relies on for navigation and timing, runs missile-warning satellites that watch for launches anywhere on Earth, manages military satellite communications, and increasingly focuses on defending those systems from interference and attack.

Ranks and careers
The Space Force built its own rank structure rather than copying the Air Force wholesale. Guardians work on the ground, not in orbit
The Space Force is not a combat force that fights in orbit. There are no troops on spaceships. Most Guardians work at ground stations, operations centers, and desks, flying satellites, analyzing data, defending networks, and managing acquisition programs. The warfighting-domain label refers to protecting the satellites everyone depends on, not to sending troops to fight in space.
