U.S. Space Command is the military command that plans and runs American operations in space. It is one of eleven unified combatant commands inside the Department of Defense, and it draws forces from every armed service instead of recruiting its own. Its area of responsibility starts 100 kilometers above mean sea level and runs outward from there.
It is not the U.S. Space Force. The Space Force is a service branch that recruits, trains and equips Guardians and buys the satellites they operate. U.S. Space Command takes those Guardians, along with Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines, and gives them missions.
What U.S. Space Command Does
U.S. Space Command plans, executes and integrates military space power into global operations, which is the wording of the command’s own published mission. That mission covers four steady jobs, and each one delivers something a commander somewhere else already depends on.
- Missile warning. Infrared sensors in orbit detect the heat of a rocket launch within seconds, and U.S. Space Command routes that warning to the leaders and air-defense units who have minutes to act on it.
- Space domain awareness. Crews track tens of thousands of satellites, spent rocket bodies and debris fragments, so an operator can tell whether an object closing in is junk or a deliberate approach.
- Satellite communications support. The command allocates military satellite capacity to the other combatant commands. That is how a unit in the middle of an ocean keeps a link when the nearest cell tower is a thousand miles away.
- Space control. Units train to keep American satellites useful while someone jams the signal, feeds it a false one, or maneuvers another object alongside it.
U.S. Space Command does not own those satellites the way a service does. It employs them. Funding, crew training and hardware purchases sit with the services. The Space Force supplies most of the people and most of the equipment that end up under the command’s orders.
The Difference Between the Space Force and Space Command
The Space Force organizes, trains and equips forces, and U.S. Space Command employs them in operations. That one split explains nearly every other difference between the two, and it is the same split that separates the U.S. Army from U.S. Central Command.
A worked example makes it concrete. When a Guardian is recruited, sent through technical training, assigned to a satellite crew and later promoted, the Space Force is doing all of it. When that same Guardian sits at a console and executes an order to maneuver a satellite away from a hostile approach, the order came down the U.S. Space Command chain.
The two chains of command stay separate all the way to the top. The Chief of Space Operations leads the Space Force and reports through the Secretary of the Air Force. The commander of U.S. Space Command reports to the President through the Secretary of Defense, exactly like every other combatant commander.

Where U.S. Space Command Is Located
The U.S. Space Command headquarters is at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and a phased move to Alabama is underway as of 2026. The headquarters has not finished moving, and any page that says it has is ahead of the facts.
What has happened is a staged buildup at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville. A small program management office opened there first. Personnel from the command’s intelligence directorate relocated in April 2026, and U.S. Space Command took operational control of a facility on the arsenal on April 29, 2026.
The permanent building does not exist yet. Groundbreaking on a purpose-built headquarters at Redstone is planned for 2027, with completion projected around 2031 and personnel moving in after that. Until then, U.S. Space Command’s operational center of gravity remains in Colorado.
Why the Headquarters Is Moving to Alabama
The Alabama move is the outcome of a basing decision that has been made, reversed and made again since 2021. Three dates cover the whole fight.
- January 2021. The Department of the Air Force named Redstone Arsenal its preferred location for the permanent headquarters, in the final days of the first Trump administration.
- July 2023. President Biden selected Peterson Space Force Base as the permanent home instead, citing the risk of degrading readiness while an operational command relocated.
- September 2, 2025. President Trump announced the headquarters would move to Huntsville after all, restarting the relocation.
The case for Redstone rests on what is already there. The arsenal hosts a dense cluster of missile and space organizations, including the Missile Defense Agency and the Army’s own space enterprise. A headquarters sited there sits within driving distance of the programs it depends on. The case against it was never about Alabama. It was about relocating most of a working combatant command’s positions while that command is on watch. The 2023 reversal rested on that readiness risk.
The Command That Was Created in 1985 and Rebuilt in 2019
U.S. Space Command was first established in September 1985, disestablished in 2002, and re-established on August 29, 2019. That gap explains why an organization described as new in 2019 keeps turning up in Cold War history.
The original command was created to give military space forces a single joint headquarters at a time when satellite warning of a Soviet launch was the central worry. After the September 11 attacks, the Pentagon reorganized its combatant commands and folded the space mission into U.S. Strategic Command, which also carries nuclear deterrence. Space stayed a subordinate concern there for seventeen years.
What brought it back was the arrival of counterspace weapons in other countries’ arsenals. Anti-satellite tests, jammers and maneuvering inspection satellites turned orbit into a place where an adversary could act first. A contested domain needs a commander whose full attention is on it. The 2019 re-establishment gave space that commander again, and the Space Force was created four months later to supply the force.
How Orders Reach a Satellite Crew
Operational tasking reaches satellite crews through the Combined Space Operations Center at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The center is the command-and-control floor for space forces, and it turns the abstract idea of a space operation into an instruction someone carries out.
Three kinds of work run through it. It issues orders to the units flying missile-warning, navigation and communications satellites. It maintains the catalog of tracked objects in orbit and pushes conjunction warnings to operators, including commercial and allied ones who are not part of the U.S. military at all. It also feeds the space picture into the plans of the other combatant commands, so a strike planner in another theater knows what overhead support exists.
Below U.S. Space Command sit service components that supply the forces, including U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command and the Space Force’s own operational component. Those component names have been reorganized more than once since 2019, so an org chart drawn in 2020 no longer matches the one in use.
How U.S. Space Command Works with Allies
Allied space operations run through Operation Olympic Defender, a multinational operation U.S. Space Command leads. It began with the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, and France and Germany joined in 2024.
The operation is less about combined firepower than combined vision. Member nations share tracking data and work toward a common picture of what is in orbit. A warning generated in one national space operations center then arrives in the others ready to use. U.S. Space Command issued its first formal multinational tasking order under the operation in 2020, which converted a cooperation agreement into orders crews execute.
No single country’s sensor network sees every orbit at every hour, and a satellite that disappears from one nation’s coverage is often visible from another’s.
Who Commands U.S. Space Command
A four-star officer nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate commands U.S. Space Command, and that officer reports to the President through the Secretary of Defense. The post is not reserved for any one service, and the first three holders came from two different ones.
- Gen. John W. Raymond, an Air Force officer, was the first commander in 2019, and he left to become the first Chief of Space Operations.
- Gen. James H. Dickinson, an Army officer, took command on August 20, 2020, the first soldier to lead the command.
- Gen. Stephen N. Whiting, a Space Force officer, became the third commander in January 2024 and was identified as commander in the command’s newsroom in April 2026.
Combatant commanders serve at the President’s discretion rather than on a fixed term, so names change without much notice. Confirmation votes are public, and the U.S. Space Command newsroom announces each change of command.
A Test for Telling the Two Organizations Apart
One question sorts almost any space headline into the right organization: is the story about building the force, or using it? Recruiting, promotions, budgets, satellite purchases, uniforms and base construction belong to the Space Force. Orders, operations, threat warnings, allied exercises and anything tied to a specific event in orbit belong to U.S. Space Command.
The Alabama headquarters story is the case that trips people up, because a basing decision looks like infrastructure while the organization being housed is a combatant command. A useful check is whose name appears in the announcement. If it is the Chief of Space Operations, it is a service matter, and if it is the combatant commander, it is an operational one.
